New manufacturing methods such as additive manufacturing allows to produce lightweight design parts with complex microstructures such as porous metals or ceramics and lattice structures. As a consequence, there is a need for micromechanics simulations to determine their effective mechanical properties.

Applying conventional FEM simulation to such microscale simulations would require a geometry-conforming mesh with a high number of very small cells to represent the complex material structure or individual pores in detail. Computing can become prohibitive.
